Open any toy box in any family home and you will find the same archaeology: a bright top layer of this year’s favourites sitting on strata of cracked, orphaned, battery-dead plastic that nobody has touched since the birthday it arrived. Cheap toys are engineered for the moment of purchase: maximum shelf appeal, minimum cost.
